Project Overview

Completed in January 2026, the renovation of the Life in Balance Spa at Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona, reimagined the guest experience to reflect Miraval’s philosophy of mindfulness and whole-body well-being. Harken Interiors led the project, which addressed every stage of a spa visit, from arrival and circulation to treatment, relaxation, and hydrotherapy. The design recognizes that no two wellness journeys are alike, giving guests opportunities to pause, reflect, and pursue their own paths to restoration.

The Sonoran Desert provided the design team with a strong sense of place. Warm neutrals, earthen hues, patinated metals, and natural textures establish continuity throughout the spa, while regional craftsmanship and artwork created specifically for the setting strengthen its connection to the surrounding landscape.

A Guest Experience Rooted in the Sonoran Desert

The transformation begins at reception, where a sculptural desk inspired by local rock formations grounds guests in the Sonoran Desert’s geology. A woven textile introduces softness and movement, while a lowered ceiling, warm colors, and a fireplace create an intimate setting that contrasts with the expansive landscape beyond. Upon arrival, guests select a natural herb or essential oil whose scent accompanies them throughout their visit, establishing a personal ritual at the start of their wellness experience.

Harken Interiors also reconsidered how guests move through the spa. Three principles guided the reimagined circulation sequence: invitation for consideration, ushering engagement, and uninterrupted focus. Along the treatment corridor, deeply raked plaster extends across the walls and ceiling, with a fluid texture inspired by monsoon rains and winds moving through the desert. Grazing light emphasizes the plaster’s irregular surface, creating patterns of light and shadow along what was previously a transitional passage.

The renovated relaxation lounge offers soft fabrics and expansive valley views, with space for reading, resting, or quiet companionship. Newly added hot and cold plunges expand the spa’s hydrotherapy offerings, allowing guests to experience hydrotherapy through an intentional rhythm of activation and restoration.

Harken Interiors sourced select furnishings from regional artisans and collaborated with artists to create works conceived specifically for the setting. These elements complement the desert-inspired materials and reinforce the resort’s connection to its natural and cultural surroundings.

Tile Selections & Creative Solutions

Crossville Porcelain Tile Panels by Laminam® Bring the Character of Travertine to the Wet Lounge

For the spa’s wet lounge, Harken Interiors selected Hado* porcelain panels in Travertino Blanco Bush Hammered and Bianco-Rain colorways.

Sustainability was a primary consideration in the selection process, with the products initially catching the design team’s attention because they aligned with the designers’ commitment to specifying responsibly sourced and environmentally conscious materials.

The designers also sought a material that captured travertine’s natural, timeless character. The porcelain panels offered the desired stone appearance without compromising the project’s material selection criteria.

The team incorporated the porcelain panels throughout the wet lounge, using the material on walls, floors, ceilings, and tub coping. The availability of multiple textures and finishes within the collection allowed the designers to address the requirements of individual applications while maintaining a consistent color palette and material aesthetic.

Sustainability and Responsible Material Selection

Throughout the renovation, sustainability informed the design decisions. In addition to selecting sustainable porcelain surfacing, Harken Interiors retained existing architectural elements and select furnishings where appropriate, reducing the need for replacement materials.

The team evaluated new materials for durability, responsible sourcing, and healthy indoor air quality. Energy-efficient lighting and furnishings incorporating recycled or responsibly harvested materials further supported Miraval’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

A Collaborative Specification Process

The Life in Balance Spa renovation was Harken Interiors’ first project working with Crossville. The design team described the product selection and specification process as exceptionally smooth and collaborative, crediting its Crossville representative with identifying solutions that addressed both design objectives and technical requirements, while consistently providing thoughtful guidance and timely responses to questions throughout the process. Senior designer Allie Drwiega said,

“Her extensive product knowledge and willingness to go above and beyond were invaluable in helping us navigate material selections with confidence. Having such a knowledgeable, responsive, and supportive resource made a meaningful difference in the overall experience and contributed to the success of the project.”

Final Impression

The renovated Life in Balance Spa brings together redesigned guest amenities, regional design influences, and responsibly selected materials. From the arrival experience and treatment corridors to the expanded hydrotherapy facilities, Harken Interiors created a setting that supports Miraval’s approach to individualized wellness while maintaining a strong connection to the Sonoran Desert. The porcelain tile panels contribute to the finished design with their timeless, travertine-inspired appearance and consistent use throughout the spa’s wet lounge.

Completed with a modest FF&E budget of $724,000, the renovation demonstrates, as Drwiega noted, that “meaningful transformation does not depend on spectacle.”
